Etapa Naționalnă 2025 (Auditions)

As always, TRM put all submissions they got into the audition round (as long as they met the length requirement, having vocals and basic stuff like that). Luckily, I’m a little bit pickier, so I’m only going to review 27 entries out of the 29 that will be performed. If you want, go ahead and look up the other two on your own.

Entries

Diana Elmas – Fly Away

This is nothing more than a dreary self-empowerment anthem. Ah, of course, it’s a Twinflame production, this explains everything.

Sasha Khanedanyan – Silent Hills

Well, this is a mild improvement, but it’s still pretty damn bad. I wouldn’t revisit it for sure. It’s just as dreary, and the vocals have left him after five seconds.

Nr. 11 – Bye

Yes, this is exactly why I watch these auditions. No other country would give us a drag king singing about how he’s too old to sing. Despite the barely understandable English pronunciation, this is so crazy that I’m actually enjoying it. Jokes aside, the performer is crazily charismatic, and it has a guitar solo for no reason. I hope it qualifies from the auditions.

Nordika – Ludmila

There are some good qualities about this, but it’s pretty bad on the whole. It’s a somewhat competent rock song with vocals that make me want to die. At least these guys are decently charmismatic.

Royals ST – Zboară-n sus

Omg, something competent. This is something akin to a sea shanty. While it’s a little repetitive, there are plenty of good ideas here, and I could see myself enjoying this with more development.

Tudor Bumbac – Pace noi vrem

I’ll always support having Tudor Bumbac on the NF stage. He’s just a wholesome grandpa trying to achieve his dreams, no matter the haters. I strive to be as cool as he is at 82 years old. Even though he forgot the words at one point and looked like he’d fall on the floor at any point, they really should let him through into the final just once.

Sasha Letty – Haute couture

This is a trashy disaster bop that I enjoy very ironically. She tried out last year with a song titled DNA, made by Jacob Jonia, the man behind Denmark’s 1987 entry. He made this as well, and you can really tell. But she sells it well - she’s just so excited to be on stage

Anna G – Meet Me in the Dark

Was supposed to be here, but got disqualified due to not showing up. This happens every year.

Dan Alexandrov – Can’t Escape

Got skipped with no explanation. Again, this happens.

Nadya Crajevschi – Not a Shadow

This is the first example of a singer who’s really fighting the shoddy quality of the production and the equipment. She performs this dramatic ballad to the best of her ability, considering what she has to deal with and easily should go through to the final with this in mind.

Predein Cristian – Moldovian Dance

You can’t title a song “Moldovian Dance” and not dance, come on. This is a little promising at times, but it’s mostly just boring. He gives off no energy, which is a shame as the melody has some promise.

Chris Cross – Eu vin

This almost feels like it shouldn’t work. And yet it does work. He has enough energy and charisma to sell the song despite his nonexistent fashion sense. I reckon it could qualify in ESC with some competent staging. And it should absolutely qualify for the NF final.

Vadim Eleni – Mamă, să fii!

Here’s how first impressions can be deceiving. The intro made me hate it, but when the song itself kicked in, I ended up enjoying it. It has a very nice flow to it, and he performs it really well. You can tell that he really connects to it. I really dislike the “aaaaa"ing in the intro and outro though, but even with them present, this should qualify for the final.

Rina – Dorințele

It’s a very pretty ballad, and Rina performs it really well. Apart from her dress, I don’t have any complaints about this: she knows what she wants to do, and she does it. I can’t complain about this.

Bacho and Carnival Brain – Semafoare

Not all people are made for dancing and this man is the biggest example of that. Apart from that, this definitely has potential because it sounds fairly modern and interesting. The bad vocals are almost certainly due to the production of this, I have no doubts that he’ll sound better in the final.

Lylu – Pop

This was an actively boring experience because I simply wasn’t convinced by it. It does have some likeable fragility to it, but everything about it just left me wanting more.

Poops ft. Zaffi – Destinul

I don’t know what I’m supposed to say about this. It was a pop song, I found it very boring, that’s it.

Priza feat. MC Mike – Kookoo

Whatever this is, at least it isn’t boring. It throws everything at the viewer, but it really woke me up after two pretty boring songs. I hope it goes through into the final as others should experience it too.

Lisa Volk – O lacrimă, un dor

This isn’t amazing by any means, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t pleasant. She has a nice, deep voice that makes this performance really work. But why do the people playing (or rather pretending to play) the instruments in the background look like they’re 14 years old?

Y-Gaga Band – Alexia

LMAO HE HAS A PHONE IN HIS HAND TO READ THE LYRICS! It’s crazy that this isn’t even the first time this has happened in the Moldovan auditions ever since I started following them. Also, this literally isn’t a band because it’s just one guy (unless his phone is the other member). At least it’s a fun song, idk. But you should know the lyrics of your song instead of reading them from your phone, I can’t believe this needs to be said.

Lodos – Sentimental

Ooh, very dramatic and waltzy. Surprisingly, it works really well, and I enjoyed it. He should definitely qualify. But the only thing I could think about during this performance was Cookiefonster’s review of Love (Lithuania 2009) because the staging also makes this look like it’s a song about pianos. Still, it was quite lovely.

Katy Rain – Timpul

There’s a lot of potential here, but it just falls short of being really good for me. But there’s no way it doesn’t qualify for the final, she’s a good singer and the song is more interesting than most.

Cătălina Solomac – Demons

This is another song that could maybe qualify in Eurovision, it’s the right amount of epic and interesting, but it would need a really good revamp. But the potential is there and in selections like this, that’s all you really care about. Also, she’s really fighting the equipment to sound well, so it’ll definitely sound better in the final.

Tanya Tudor – Bring Me Back

This is a total yawn. There wasn’t anything totally wrong with it, but it’s just so boring and mediocre. I just can’t take it anymore.

Pavel Pașcan – Alăturea de tine

As opposed to good wedding-sounding songs, this is a cheap and amateur wedding-sounding song. But it has a certain level of charm to it, and he had decent vocals (except for a horrible voice crack near the end), which saves it from the pits of hell.

Zelorielle – Miracle

I don’t mind this existing, which is more than I can say about quite a few other songs in the lineup. Her vocals are good, and the song, while mediocre, has enough redeeming qualities not to be really horrible.

Valleria – A Picture of Myself

Got disqualified due to showing up late. That’s harsh, but at least this is finally over.

General Thoughts

Moldovan auditions are always a disaster, so I didn’t expect much and got just about what I expected. There were a few songs that showed promise in the lineup, which is the best-case scenario for Moldova (last year, nothing showed promise). Three disqualifications is also more-or-less normal for this. Let’s see who actually qualifies for the final (I hope it’s normal songs).

The qualifiers are mostly sensible, thankfully, as they always are, except they qualified that annoying troll Bognibov who hates any kind of critisism and uses copyright takedowns to silence everyone, so all ESC youtubers should probably skip ranking the Moldovan final.
